I picked up four of these, this is the largest The smaller ones have slightly more dramatic coloration No scientific names
This one is easy because I have them myself :D It's a scolopendra cingulata
About the alipes. It's really easy. Put them together and if they keep each other compagny and stay on the same place you can leave them but if they intantly run away as soon as they touch seperate them.

awesome!
ok, next question. i have a large "jar" or "jug" that i was thinking of keeping my future (hopefully) colony in.
the jar is at least 30cm in diameter and 45cm tall. i was thiking of filling it about 15cm of packed-in coconut coir(80%)/sphagnum moss(20%) and then adding some fake plants and other goodies for the Alipes to climb on. Do you think this will be large enough?
It will be set up so they can burrow if they like (with some buried structures for them to burrow under/around) and also to satisfy any arboreal tendencies they might have

i choose to handle venomous animals but this is not an "official venomlist"
endorsement, but a personal one :)

i should take an annoyingly huge amount of pics, if all goes well :)
do you know of any other "communal" centipedes?
i am going to try and get my colony of red stone centipedes (Lithobius sp.) running again and a seperate colony of black ones (just saw them for the first time at my brother's new house:) )
i didn't know it (or keep forgetting) but some lithobiomorphae can live 4-6 YEARS!

Greece is spooky looking!
i love it
er, i know this is sort of a "dark" subject, but have you ever tried cross-breeding different locality cingulata?
i know crosses are generally not as attractive as their parents, but it would be quite interesting to see which are fertile and which are sterile, etc.
awesome awesome pics!

pest grade C. vittatus from my buddy's front yard :)
don't feel too bad, he sent me a mesic female C. vittatus and a xeric (it's frickin YELLOW!) C. vittatus male, so hopefully i'll be producing interesting looking morph-mixed babies sooner or later :)

Because of you to see letting your centipeds walk on you body ...... I eventually made similar with a subspinipes  . Now I do not stop any more. :love3:
ah crap.... subspinipes... you have raised the bar...
mainly, ah crap though... that is intense!
now i need to hold one of those... this should be interesting
awesome pics!
i just have to ask though... you do know that if that thing tags you it is likely to be quite unbearable, right?
i mean, to date the species i have held would likely be only very painful (or not painful at all... ) if they bite... but a subspinipes is supposed to be painful like breaking a bone or getting shot :)
i just want to make sure, i'd hate for you to get suprised the bad way!
awesome awesome awesome!

This sort bites rather hard, but not so painful as a breaking bone. It is closer to a finger in the door of a car. ;)
But the pain must be variable according to the size and the subspecies of subpinipes.
The one bite me was a little smaller than that of the photo, I never was bitten by a very big.
As I was bitten only by a one sort, I cannot really make of comparing.

very cool!
i am not suprised that bites are variable like that.
i just wanted to make sure you knew it *could* be nasty :)
what is the name of that subspinipes? i think i've seen it before and have always thought it was very nice looking
i'm sure after a while i'll be able to make a very interesting comparison chart :)
